[ MR ROBOT — TV COMMERCIAL ]
[ THE WORK ]
Concept & Ambition
A haunting visual commercial created for the final season of the critically acclaimed series Mr. Robot. Starring Oscar-winner Rami Malek, the spot was designed to capture the psychological breakdown and impending collapse of Elliot’s world through a stark, visceral image: the iconic fsociety mask physically disintegrating in real time.
Role & Craft
As Director, I led the creative approach to bring this high-concept sequence to life. Working with Rami Malek on set, my focus was on capturing an intense, grounded performance while establishing precise practical reference points to guide a sophisticated VFX execution.
How We Did It
To achieve the surreal, tactile illusion of plastic melting directly onto a live performer, we created a hybrid practical-and-CG workflow:
Performance: Rami Malek performance in a dark, atmospheric studio setting, anchoring the spot in a quiet, tense physical performance, his face covered in tiny black tracking dots for post-production to use and track.
Practical Reference: Custom made wax fsociety masks were melted on-set during production, capturing authentic lighting hits, dripping textures, and organic viscosity under controlled studio lighting.
Hybrid CG Integration: In post-production, the practical melting footage was used as a guide to drive the complex CG simulations that were tracked with Rami’s live-action plates to seamlessly distort and melt the mask over his face.
Execution & Reach
Launched in collaboration with NBC, the campaign generated massive fan engagement across network television, digital, and social platforms.
Would you ever know the mask wasn't on his face? The result is a raw, immersive commercial with invisible visual effects and a style and tone that mirrors the series itself.
